Fundraising Thanks

The Board of Directors would like to thank Margaret Jaques, Brenda Foster and their wonderful team of supporters who have worked very hard to raise such a magnificent amount of money during the Easter period - over £750 in all! Well done.

Easter Tournament Success

EXCITEMENT and enthusiasm continued right to the end of the near-seven hour Easter Tournament sponsored by Co-operative Funeral Care and staged at Scarborough Indoor Bowls Centre on Sunday.

Twelve teams of three played four 75-minute sessions in the competition which was run by SIBC members Geoff Bint and Bob Dickens. Prizes were presented by funeral director Graham Templeman, representing the sponsors.

The three leading teams going into the final session were Terry Edmond, Matthew Bell and George Preston Jnr., with six points plus 30 shots, Jack Bird, Joan Hodges and Phil Baker, with six points plus 18 shots, and John Buckle, Amy Ker and Lynne Dawson, also with six points plus 18 shots.

In the final session the Edmond/Bell/Preston team faced a tough challenge from Albert Mouser, George Preston Snr. and Keith Palmer, but managed to win by four shots to give them a competition-winning eight points plus 34 shots to take the £90 first prize.

The other leading teams of Bird/Hodges/Baker and Buckle/Ker/Dawson faced each other for the final session, with the former taking the game by three shots to claim runners-up spot with eight points plus 21 shots for a £60 prize. The Buckle/Ker/Dawson combination had done enough throughout the competition, however, to hang on to third place with six points plus 15 shots for a £30 prize.

No team was allowed to win more than one prize so the session winners were: session one, Mouser/Preston/Palmer, with plus 10 shots; session two, John Punter/Jonny Stanger/Liz Briggs, with plus 11 shots; session three, Adie Bird/James Brown/Eileen Hornsey, with plus 14 shots; session four, Pam Miller/Julie Tappin/Steve Bell, with plus four shots. Each session winning team received £15.

Bernard Preston also won £10 for having the closest bowl in an after-lunch spider competition.

Bowls Centre Awarded £500 in Vantage Toyota Community Drive

An initiative to introduce the game of bowls to Scarborough's young school children resulted in Scarborough Bowls Centre being awarded £500 in the recent Vantage Toyota Community Drive.
Colin Rennard, the manager of the Centre said, "We are delighted to have been successful in our bid in this Community Drive offered by Vantage Toyota, which means that we have been able to purchase four sets of all-surface bowls. These can be used indoor or outdoors on wood, carpet or even tarmac surfaces and offer a great way of introducing youngsters to the skills associated with the game of bowls. Already Gladstone Road Junior School are trialling them and the aim is to offer them to all local junior schools on a regular short term loan basis."
