The Annual U25 Open Pairs Competition at Hornsea IBC
On Saturday 19th April we entered 4 teams into the annual U25 Open Pairs Competition at Hornsea IBC
Our teams were Nicola Preston / Simon Butcher, Gemma Preston / Jenny Tappin, John Hall / James Bedford & Jack Bird / Ben Holt ( last year's Plate winners ).
Each match was 11 ends or 1hr 15mins.
For the first round losers they go into a plate Competition.
Nicola & Simon were playing against two County Players from Leeds Mark Hughes & Steve Packer.
After 4 ends it was close at 2 each. At 8 ends we held a slight lead 5-4. Nicola & Simon then played 2 fantastic ends to score two 4's to lead 12-4 and finished with a 3 to finish 15-4 winners.
James & John were up against Alistair Domville (New Earswick) & Lydia Cutmore ( Hornsea).
After a slow start behind 0-3 we picked up a 4 to lead 4-3 over the next 2 ends scored 5 shots to lead 9-3 and were holding another 4 but for the oppositions last bowl to take shot now 9-4. One shot was scored by each side over the last 2 ends for us to go through 10-5 into the main Competition along with Nicola & Simon.
Gemma & Jenny were playing against County players Joe Ballantyne & Paul Moseley (York)
The girls started slowly 0-4 down after 3 ends but came back to score 2 shots on the 4th end. The York lads scored 2 shots and then a 3 to lead 9-2. The girls never gave up even though the boys were very vocal and scored another 2 to still trail 9-4 both teams scored one shot each on the last 2 ends for the girls to lose 10-6 in a very close game.
Jack & Ben were up against Thomas Hall & Lauren Copeland (Thornaby) Lauren an established England player. The boys getting back late from Potters after the incident return home!
After 6 ends it was level at 4 each, our boys went into slim lead with a 3 and then on the next end losing 1 shot. Going into the last end ahead 7-5 Unfortunately Lauren played a fantastic end to pick up the 3 shots to win the match 8-7.
This meant that the boys joined Gemma & Jenny in the Plate Competition.
In the Main Comp we had Nicola / Simon against James / John. After 4 ends it was 5 each, then James & John took the next 5 ends to stretch out a lead 14-5. Nicola & Simon pulled back two shots 14-7 but James & John finished the last end with a score of 2 to finish 16-7, they were now in the semi final of the Main Competititon.
Gemma & Jenny played against Ben & Jack in the Plate Competititon. Ben & jack were out of the blocks really fast and scored 8 shots in 3 ends before the girls started. After 7 ends the boys still led 9-4 but they were too strong for the girls and won 18-4. They were now in the semi final in the Plate. So out of the 4 teams that started the day we had 2 left in in each comp.
James & John were up against the York pairing of Paul Moseley / Joe Ballentyne. We were 3 down after the first end and were holding 3 when Paul Moseley killed the end with his last bowl. They continued to keep our lads out and built up a 17- 0 lead with no luck when you need it coming our way. They kept taking our woods out of the head to pile on more pressure. We lost 24 - 1.
On the other rink was Jack & Ben against Alistair Domville (New Earswick) & Lydia Cutmore (Hornsea). For the first time in the day Jack struggled and Ben kept pulling off some brilliant bowling to keep the lads in the lead. After 5 ends we led 7 - 2 took the next end with a 3 then dropped a 2 to know lead 10- 4 won the next 2 ends to pull away to 13-4 with the opposition scoring a one on the last end. Ben & Jack are now in the final winning the semi 13-5.
In the final they were up against Top County & England bowlers Scott Burrell ( Hornsea) & Zoe Eagles (York). It did not start too well dropping a 4 on the first end. Jack played like his old self and with Ben continuing his form came back to level at 5 each after 5 ends. We then took a two shot lead on the next end, then a three to now lead 10-5 Scott & Zoe came back with 1 shot and then a two. Zoe was just about to get the Jack sent when the umpire called time so Ben & Jack won 10-8 and retained the Plate from last year. It was a terrific game to watch.
In the main comp Paul Moseley & Joe Ballentyne (York) were playing against Carl Stoakes & Katie Baxter (Hornsea). Carl & Katie started well and led 4-0 only for Paul & Joe to level it with 4shots on the 5th end. Carl & Katie kept the pressure on and continued scoring with two singles shots and then a 4 to now lead 10-4. Paul & Joe were getting annoyed with themselves and their control suffered. They never scored again with Carl & Katie scoring a 3 & finished with a single shot to win 14-4.

Yorkshire president Les Bingley was there to present the trophies and thanked all the players for once again demonstrating great bowling skills & concentration over a long days bowling. He thanked the coaches, also Ian Paddy and Hornsea for the venue. He made special reference to Jack Bird and his attitude to the game for one so young.
Only the May Festival left for this season, which we have 4 teams entered.

Annual end of season Champion of Champions at Hornsea IBC |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
On Saturday the 12th April both Jack Bird & Ben Holt represented Scarborough in the annual end of season Champion of Champions held every year at Hornsea IBC.
Each singles match is the first to 18 shots or 1 hour 15 mins.
Any losing player in the first round goes through into a plate competition.
Ben played his first match against a girl from South Leeds and once he got going after 5 ends went into the lead 5-4 and never looked back winning convincingly 18-5 in fairly quick time.
Jack played his first match against a boy from Thornaby. Jack started off really well leading 7-2 and after 5 more ends 11-4 but the lad from Thornaby did not give up and trailed 14-9 and was holding a 4 when Jack with his last bowl took shot to lead 15-9. Jack lost the last end with a 2 but still still won 15-11.
Ben played his second match now in the main competition and unfortunately never really got started as whatever he did the lad from York could do better. He lost 18-1.
Jack played his 2nd game in the main competition and this was a real dogfight against Daniel Cowap from Thornaby. After 7 ends it was level at 6 each. Jack trailed 12-7 after the next 4 ends. Over the next 4 ends jack pulled it back to level at 14 each. Then he won the next end to lead 15-14. He dropped a 2 to go behind 16-15 with the time running out Daniel gave the jack away as it was going to be the last end. Jack started brilliantly and laid 3 shots up. Daniel bowled a superb bowl to take the shot and win the match. Therefore jack lost 17-15. A real cracker of a game.
The plate was won by Hollie Arundel of Selby beating David Barrow from Barnsley 18-11.
The main Comp was won by Thornaby's Ben Suggitt who won 14-12 over last years winner Adam Tattersall from York. Yorkshire's Vice - President Phil Parsons presented the trophies, he thanked the umpire, markers, supporters & the players for their sportsmanship and concentration levels over a long day.
His final thank you went to Ian Paddy for organising the day.

Ben Holt wins both the U18 handicapped singles & the open singles |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Saturday 5th April saw Ben Holt & Jack Bird, both finalsts last year battle it out again in both the U18 handicapped singles & the U18 open competitions. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
 |
|
In the morning was the handicapped singles, this is a competition to handicap the more experienced bowlers to give a reasonable chance for the less experienced. Both showed their talent by reaching the final.
The winner is the first to score 21 shots.
After 3 ends only 3 shots were scored with Ben leading 2-1. In the 4th end Jack picked up 3 shots to go into the lead.Ben responded with 2 shots on the next 2 endsto get the lead back now 6-4. |
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
In the 7th Jack scored 2 shots to level at 6 all, Ben again led with 1 shot on the 8th. Jack came back again with 3 ends on the run each scoring 2 shots. Now Jack leading 12 - 7. This motivated Ben as he scored on the next 4 ends with a 3,2,1 &2 to go into the lead 15-12. On the 16th end Jack stopped the run with a single but Ben was not to falter as he scored on the next 4 ends the 6 shots he needed to win 21-13.
In the afternoon they played for the open singles Peter Hesp Trophy.
Again like the first game it was very tight with Jack leading 5-4 after 5 ends.
Ben leveled to 5 all but then Jack put on the pressure scoring 4 shots on the next end to lead 9-5.
Ben came back with 3,1,&3 to again lead 12-9 at 10 ends.
Jack then retaliated with 8 shots on the next 5 ends to lead 17-12. Ben scored a single on the next now 17-13. It looked as if history was repeating itself as last year Ben won the handicapped and Jack won the open. The other matches in the afternoon had finished being the ladies & men's singles finals. So all eyes were now on the juniors and what a finish we had with the high standard being continued throughout. Jack took the next end with a 2 to lead 19-13, Ben pulled off some fantastic bowling to win the next 6 ends scoring 8 shots to win 21-19.
Both players did themselves proud with their sportsmanship & standard of play all day.
Ben is the first junior to win both competitions in the same year. Watch this space as jack might have something to say about that in the coming years.

On Sunday 16th March the final of the U25 Men's Singles took place at Harrogate IBC.
Jack bird (11 ) against Karl Stoakes ( 24 ).
The format is 2 sets of 7 ends with a tie break of 3 ends if needed.
Jack started well holding 2 shots then Karl came and drew shot. Jack came back and took the shot.
On the 2nd end Jack had a toucher and laid shot, Karl came in with his last wood to rest the jack to take shot and equalise.
End 3 Jack was again holding shot but Karl came in to rest the jack onto |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
his other bowl to convert into 2 shots.
End 4 Jack was holding 4 shots and Karl came in and drew shot with his last bowl, so Jack could have been in the lead but was now 4-1 down.
End 5 Jack bowled very close with his 1st bowl but again Karl showing his experience bowled all 4 of his woods really close and Jack could not manage to cut it down,Jack now 8-1 down.
End 6 Jack had a toucher with his 2nd bowl following his 1st just behind the jack. Jack knew he needed a minimum of 3 shots to go into the final end of the set. His 3 rd bowl was also just behing the jack and with his last delivery needed to move the jack back to pick up 4 shots. He came in and touched the jack but unfortunately caught the side and moved to jack out of the rink by inches. So they had to play the 6th end again. Again jack placed his woods just behind the head Karl was holding 3 shots with jack again trying to move the jack back to score 4 but this time just missed moving the jack Karl drew in another with his last to score 4 and win the set 12-1
The second set Karl's first wood was just 6inches in front of the jack with Jack bowling shot still in front of the jack. Karl's next bowl hit both bowls and moved the jack back nearly in the ditch, Jack drew shot then Karl drew closer jack 's next delivery was a running bowl to to hit either Karl's bowl out for Jack to get shot or hit the jack in the ditch again for Jack to take shot. Again his luck was not in as jack's bowl looked on target all the way and again he sliced the jack and "killed" the end.
So they played the end again and Karl scored 1 shot.
End 2 Karl was holding 3inches from the jack and jack drew in to take shot 1-1.
End 3 Jack had a bowl 6inches from the jack & Karl drew in 2 bowls closer to go 3-1 up.
End 4 Jack's first wood behind about a foot,Karl got a toucher but went behind about the same. Jack drew in for shot and with the measure scored 2 to go 3 all.
End 5 Jack was holding shot when Karl had a running wood and put the jack in the ditch about a foot from the the end of the rink, so Karl was holding shot. Jack drew but just failed to come back into the rink. Karl drew in for a second shot. Jack behind 5-3.
End 6 Jack's first wood 6inches short Karl drew to 2 inches with 2 woods with Jack could not get closer, jack now 7-3 down.
On the last end Jack needed 4 to tie the set and was holding 4 shots, Karl fired and killed the end. So the end had to be replayed. Jack played his first about 5inches behind the jack and had a toucher with Karl not getting close enough so Jack scored a 2 to lose 7-5 and therefore 2 sets to nil.

Even though Jack lost he played a very mature & controlled game with him playing to my mind the correct shot every time. Karl was just too good on the day.
It was a good learning experience and to think he is still able to play in this competition for another 14 years!!!!Ian Paddy was there to present them both with a trophy on behalf of Yorkshire County, he congratulated both players on a terrific game.

U18 League match against York on Sunday 17th
We played our last U18 League match of the season against York at the Centre on Sunday 17th.
Unfortunately it does not make good reading. York were simply too good for us on the day.
On on rink we had Jessica & Hannah Pacey with James Bedford they lost 27-5. On the other was John Hall, Jonathan Stanger with Ben Holt & they lost 15-3. Therefore we scored no points and York overtook us in the league. So we will finish bottom.
Jack Bird was not available to play as he was at York for the men's Yorkshire County "B" team but confusion reigned as the opposition did not turn up. So they played between themselves very disappointing.
Anyway let's hope for better things as Jack is representing the Club in the men's U25 singles Competition at Hornsea on the 24th.
We have also entered four teams into the U25 open pairs also at Hornsea on the 19th April.
They involve some juniors, the teams are:-
Jenny Tappin & Gemma Preston
John Hall & James Bedford
Jack Bird & Ben Holt
Simon Butcher & Nicola Preston
Jack & Ben won the plate last year so let's hope for some more success this year.

On Sunday 20th January we travelled to Thornaby to play the latest round of matches.
Each match was two hours or 15 ends.
The first match was against Hornsea.
On one rink we had Hannah & Jessica Pacey with skip James Bedford. We were behind 6-2 after 5 ends and whatever they did, Hornsea produced a better bowl. Still close at 8-5 down at 10 ends. We took the 11th end with one shot to trail 8-6 unfortunately we dropped one shot on the 12th end and two shots on each of the final three ends to lose 15-6.
Our other rink had John Hall, Jack Bird & skip Ben Holt. We lost the first 4 ends but only dropped one shot on each end. On the 5th end we picked up three shots. Then each team scored two shots on the next two ends for us to still be behind one shot 6-5. Hornsea then scored a three & two to lead 11-5 after 9 ends. We then came back with a two shot & one to still trail 11-8. On the 12th end we scored a brilliant 6 shots with their skip top Yorkshire player Scott Burrell firing and missing all three of his bowls. Hornsea could only score one shot on the next end and we finished the match winning 16-12.
We scored 2 points for this win but Hornsea scored 4 points for their rink win & two points for the combined total 27-22.
After a 30 min break we were playing the second match this time against York.
Jack, John & Ben struggled to continue their form in the early stages dropping 11 shots in three ends to go behind 11-2 after 5 ends. The rest of the match was quite even with us scoring 9 shots to York's 10 over the next 10 ends resulting in York winning 21-9.
On the other rink Jonathan Stanger played instead of Hannah Pacey. The early exchanges were very close after 5 ends we led 4-2.
We then scored a single followed by a six to go ahead 11-2. York came back taking 6 shots over the next 4 ends. On the 12th end the umpire was called on to measure and he ruled a tied end so neither team scored. We won the last three ends scoring unfortunately only one shot on each to win 14-8, we could not get enough to take the aggregate and lost 29-23. Again we could only pick up 2 points out of the possible 6. This still leaves Scarborough in third place in the Division.

On Sunday 13th January Scarborough held the 11th annual Tournament for the under 18's. Sixteen teams took part from all over Yorkshire & Durham. Including two local teams.
The teams were drawn into 4 groups to play 3 matches of either 9 ends or 50 mins each.
The top 8 teams would progress into the main Competition and the rest into a plate comp, which is a straight knockout format which means every team is still in with a chance of |

winning in one of the comps.
Our "A" team of Jack Bird, John Hall & skip Ben Holt played their three matches against Selby "A", Darlington "C"& Hornsea "B" winning all three 10-3 13-6 & 14-3. This meant they won their group and would play in the main Competition.

In the plate James Bedford skipped Hannah & Jessica Pacey again and played Selby "B" and were behind 5-2 after 5 ends, to come back strong in the final 4 ends to score 8 shots to Selby's 2 for us to win 10-7 to go into the semi-final.
The girls & James were up against Darlington "B" another good team at 5 ends we led by 1 shot 5-4 and so it finished very close all the way through but we won 8-5 now in the plate final.
In the plate final James & the Pacey girls played Hornsea "B" and were behind after 5 ends 5-2 unfortunately this was one game too many losing 14-4 but still a terrific result each winning a trophy & £5.

In the main Jack Bird, John Hall & Ben Holt were up against a strong Thornaby "B" team, we were fast away at the start leading 6-2 after 5 ends and holding onto the lead till the end after a big finish from Thornaby we won 8-6. So we are now in the semi-final of the main comp also a brilliant achievement from all our players.
Jack, John & Ben played against Darlington "A" in the early stages it was another close one 3-2 to us after 5 ends. Darlington just had too much on the day to win 9-3.
The lads went into the 3rd / 4th playoff against Thornaby"A" and showed great determination after losing in the semi to win 15-8 thereby finishing in 3rd place and won £10 each.
In the plate final James & the Pacey girls played Hornsea "B" and were behind after 5 ends 5-2 unfortunately this was one game too many losing 14-4 but still a terrific result each winning a trophy & £5.
The main final was Hornsea "A2 v Darlington "A" (who beat our "A" team in the semi). This was a very close match with continued high standard of bowling. Hornsea took an early lead 6-3 Darlington came back to take a 3 shot lead 11-8 with only one end to play. Hornsea could only score 2 shots so they lost by 1 shot 11-10.

I thanked all the players for a great days bowling, also all the parents/grandparents & coaches, the Bowls Centre Sue Preston & Joan Colley for running the tombola raising £93.
Our sponsors The Laird and Lady of Glencairn for their continued support.
I wished everyone a safe journey home & looked forward to next year.
I then collapsed in a heap!!!!!!!!!

On Sunday 16th December Scarborough Bowls Centre hosted the latest stage of the Yorkshire U18 league matches. Unfortunately York could not raise a team & therefore both Hornsea and ourselves would only play one game in the day.
We did however arrange to play a friendly between ourselves over the first two hours, while the other clubs in the County played their first of two matches in the day.
Each game was over 2 hours or 15 ends whichever came first.
I took the opportunity to give James Bedford a game, as it was his first taste of this League.
He played with Joseph Mann & Jonathan Stanger, changing these two with Jessica Pacey & Jack Brown after an hour. We won convincingly 16-4.
In the main match we played Thornaby "A" on one rink Jonathan Stanger with Jessica Pacey skipped by James Bedford played really well trailing 5-4 after 5 ends. Every end was close and at 10 ends we still trailed 8-6. We scored a 2 to level at 8 each on the 9th end. Unfortunately we dropped a 4 on the 12th, which put the pressure on us with ends running out. We scored 1 on the next 2 ends to again trail by 2 at 12-10 and we could not manage a big finish on the last end as we dropped a shot to lose 13-10. Considering it was the first time these three had played as a team I thought they did a fantastic job against a strong Thornaby side.
On the other rink John Hall with Jack Bird skipped by Ben Holt started off really well leading 7-1 after 5 ends. Thornaby scored on the next 2 ends with a 1&2 to cut our lead to 7-4 then 1 shot each on the next 2 ends kept our lead to of 3 shots 8-5 after 9 ends, but we came back strongly in the 10th picking up a 4 & 1 to lead 13-5. We lost a 3 on the 12th end now it was 13-8 again we hit back with a brilliant 6 on the 13th end to now lead 19 - 8. Thornaby scored a 2 on the 14th & what was to be the final end. We won 19-10 which meant that we scored 2 points for the rink victory & 2 points for the combined scores of both rinks, so 4 out of a possible 6.
A great all round effort from all 6 players.
We have arranged to play York in February 2008.
We have 16 teams entered for the Scarborough January Tournament.
On a final note this week Jack Bird has been involved in winning 3 Leagues, one of which was with fellow junior Ben Holt in the Friday Aussie Pairs, I would imagine the first time just juniors have won a League!
